American Hindu World Service (AHWS) is an organization based on the Hindu faith-based perspectives of international development with a focus on global health. AHWS aims to promote, educate and advocate on the Hindu-faith based perspectives of service of global health. However, AHWS is dedicated towards the Interfaith activities, and promote secularlism.
As with all faiths (Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Buddhism, Native American faiths, Confucianism, Daoism, Shintoism, etc.) Hindu philosophy shares a common denominator in emphasizing on the value of service and charity. It is the duty of every human being to serve others and to respect all forms of life.
The importance of service is mentioned in several of the ancient Hindu texts, such as the Bhagavad Gita, Mahabharatha, Ramayana, Vedas and the Upanishads. In the modern international development forum, Hindu service viewpoints can be applied towards fields such as nutrition/food security, water/sanitation, environment, education, women's empowerment, and microfinance.
As a whole, the American public has little understanding of Hinduism. AHWS seeks to educate the American public about the service aspects of Hinduism. The aims of AHWS is to not convert or impose (this is against Hindu faith), but to educate individuals about our community AND to spread service work around the globe, including in nations where there are non-Hindu population.
